Overview

The South Fremont Education Foundation is pleased to offer the following scholarships for this current year: 1-$650 Dustin Birch, 8-$500 SFEF Scholarships, 1-$1,100 Venna Welker Secrist, 1-$1,000 Parker, Davis, Rudd, Nelson, Wadsworth, 1-$500 Ruth Adamson, 1-$500 Justin Jicha “Cougar Strength,” 1-$500 Muriel Dee Barnes, 1-$1,000 Neil and Lana Kunz, 1-$500 South Fremont Wrestling, 1-$1000 Bonnie Warne “Excellence in Education,” 2-$625 “James Clarence and Ruth Bean Siddoway”

The Bruce and Patti Crapo Scholarship Fund was established in 2022 as a way for them to give back to the community and help promote learning and education. They are offering 2-$1000 Scholarships. **This requires a separate application form. You can find a link to the application by clicking on the Bruce and Patti Crapo link. The link to the application is listed directly below the scholarship information.

The Deadline to submit all Scholarship Applications to the Counselors’ office is the 3rd Monday in April.

Dustin Birch

The Dustin Birch scholarship was established in 2006 in honor of LCPL Dustin V. Birch, a South Fremont graduate who was killed in action while serving in the Marine Quor in Operation Iraqi Freedom on June 9, 2005. This scholarship was originally intended for Debate students but now also includes the Arts.

AMOUNT: $650 One Time

REQUIREMENTS: The factors considered in awarding this scholarship include the student’s efforts and grades through out High School, involvement in extracurricular activities, citizenship, character, and need.

The degreee to which each of these factors influences the awarding of the scholarship will vary depending on the group of applicants.

SFEF Scholarships – 8 ($500)

The South Fremont Education Foundation (SFEF) is offering these scholarships to graduating seniors from SFHS who are planning to go on and further their education.

General Scholarships – 8 ($500)

REQUIREMENTS:  Each candidate must have conducted themselves in harmony with current school policy.  He/she should exhibit character, leadership, and school, family, and community involvement.  Grades are part of the consideration as well as financial need.

Venna Welker Secrist

“This scholarship is in honor of Venna Secrist, a lifetime resident of Fremont County , who was raised to work hard and get by on the bare necessities. She attended school through the eighth grade when she quit in order to work to help her struggling family. Venna’s family established this scholarship to help those who, like her, because of need, might not have the opportunities to pursue a post secondary education.”

AMOUNT: $1,100

REQUIREMENTS: Priority will be given to a non-traditional (trade or technical school) student.  Character will be considered as well as financial need and grades are not a factor.

Parker, Davis, Rudd, Nelson, Wadsworth (Class of 1967)

This scholarship if offered through the generous efforts of these five families, ( Parker, Davis, Rudd, Nelson, Wadsworth) who are all class of 1967 graduates of South Fremont High School.

AMOUNT: $1000

REQUIREMENTS:  The criteria is general and open to all who apply.  Demonstration of good character is important along with participation in extracurricular activities.  Financial need  and grades will also be considered.

Ruth Adamson EMS (1992-2011)

Ruth Adamson’s native land was Finland.  She learned English as a second language in first grade at Duluth Minnesota.  Ruth taught Spanish and French at South Fremont High for 25 years.  She has since learned German and at the age of 72 has become proficient in Russian.  Her motto is “One is never too old to learn, and to teach.” It is because of her great love for students and learning that she has graciously started this perpetual scholarship.  This will bless the lives of many future students wanting to further their education.

AMOUNT: $500

REQUIREMENTS:  This scholarship will be given to a student who has taken at least 2 years of foreign language.  Grades should be a B- or better.  Two weeks before this scholarship is awarded, the applicant must submit a written essay in a foreign language explaining why they would like to continue studying a foreign language.  These essays will be part of the consideration by their teacher as to who receives the scholarship.  * Mrs. Adamson would like to encourage all students to learn a foreign language.

Cougar Strength

The Cougar Strength Scholarship is a yearly scholarship offered by Justin Jicha.

AMOUNT: $500

REQUIREMENTS: Must have a 3.0 GPA and the intent to pursue anything in the health field.

Muriel Dee Barnes

Muriel graduated from South Fremont High in 1955. She started her training that fall at LDS School of Nursing in Idaho Falls. After graduation she served a mission in Illinois for her church. She then joined the military and served as a flight transport nurse during the Korean War. She also worked on the floor as a surgical nurse for the Red Cross. Her favorite duty was the maternity ward where she was very protective of her patients. She was a very kind lady who was always a good listener.

Neil and Lana Kunz

In 1973 Neil and Lana Kunz moved to St. Anthony, Idaho to establish a dental practice.  They raised eight children who graduated from South Fremont High School and several of them pursued careers in the medical area. In gratitude for the support of this fine community and school. we are establishing this scholarship to help encourage our youth to go forward with their education. As a family, we would like to be involved with the selection of the candidate and would like to encourage a youth who is focused on a career in the health profession.  We are more anxious to donate this scholarship to a young person who is focused on this area of study with less emphasis on their grade point.

AMOUNT: $1000

Jay Banta Wrestling Scholarship

Jay Banta and the Banta family have been instrumental in the success of South Fremont Wrestling.  It’s important to the Banta Family as well as the wrestling program, that the lessons learned on the mat continue throughout life.  For this reason, this scholarship has been made to give more opportunity to student-athletes after they leave high school.  This scholarship can be used for any type of postsecondary education. 

It is through the efforts of family, coaches, parents, and alumni that the South Fremont Wrestling program would like to offer this wrestling scholarship.  The applicant must be a wrestler who is a well rounded individual, has good citizenship skills, and is a team supporter.  Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required

Bonnie Warne (Excellence in Education)

Bonnie Warne was born in Harrisburg Pennsylvania and raised in Susquehanna Township; a lovely horseshoe-shaped piece of land that surrounds the Capitol. She went to BYU, graduated, and taught in Grace, Idaho for one year before coming to South Fremont for the next 42 years. While at South, she pursued her masters and doctorate degrees from the University of Idaho and was able to showcase the young minds that were growing around her. Besides being passionate about learning, she loves nature, hiking and seeing the beauty around us. She loves all animals. Bonnie loves this community of people and wants to remind everyone of the gifts that each person has and to expand those gifts so that we can contribute to make this world better for everyone.

AMOUNT: (1) $1000

James Clarence and Ruth Siddoway                

James Clarence (JC) and Ruth Bean Siddoway were the parent’s of Theodore “Ted” Siddoway who established a perpetual scholarship in honor of his parents’ legacy. As a child, Ted was enrolled in Teton Elementary and Madison High School, graduating in 1943. He was inducted into the US Army Air Corps, and received training as a navigator. Ted attended both Stanford and Harvard, graduating in 1953 with a Master of Architecture.

Ruth Bean Siddoway had a passion for education and encouraged all her children to go on and get a higher degree. 

JC Siddoway was a successful businessman, rancher, and farmer. He served in the Idaho State Legislature. He was a very generous man and provided financial aid as well as backing for people of the Upper Snake River Valley.

A scholarship in their memory is a fitting tribute.

REQUIREMENTS:
No GPA requirement
Scholarship can be based on need
No specific major required
If an applicant is related to the family of JC and Ruth Siddoway, preference is given to that applicant.

As a family of JC, Ruth, and Ted Siddoway, we have always been and are proud of our heritage. We are grateful for those who have gone before and built a strong foundation. We are appreciative of those who are now building and pleased to help our future generations continue the Siddoway legacy.

Bruce and Patti Crapo

The Bruce and Patti Crapo Scholarship Fund was established in 2022 as a way for them to give back to the community and help promote learning and education. Bruce and Patti have a great love for South Fremont High School and the community of St. Anthony. Their hope is that this scholarship will help others to realize their educational dreams.

At the end of the South Fremont High School academic year, 2 scholarships of $1000 each, will be awarded to deserving graduating students who want to continue their education. There is no required field of education. All applicants will be considered. The money awarded may be used for Vocational School, Technical College, or University expenses.

The deadline for submitting an application for this scholarship is the first Monday in the month of May. Students should return their completed application to the counselors’ office by the close of the school day.
